Cretan Dance
There are many types of Cretan Dances, the Sousta is the facing dance of Crete that has a lot of elements from
the ancient pirihios. The particular way that is danced is the evidence. The
dance is being danced by men and women, alternately holding palms all together,
shaping in the beginning a semicircle, afterwards they separate and stand the
one opposite the other making two teams, on of the men and one of the women.
During the dance a story is developed between the man and the woman, the man calls and hugs, trying to invite the woman erotically. The woman with
turnings and figures resists to the erotic call. With the movements of the
hands and the head, a discussion is developed little by little. Till in the
end, befalls the union.

Cretan Music
The origins of music in Crete, and Greece in
general, is associated in myth with the birth of the father of gods, Zeus, on Crete.
According to Greek mythology Crete is the cradle of Zeus, music and dance.
The legend of the birth of Zeus is associated with the Curιtes cult. The Curιtes were the warriors who danced round the cave where
the baby Zeus was being nursed, covering his cries from his father Cronus by
the clashing of their shields.
The earliest documented music on Crete comes from Ancient Greece. Cretan
music like most traditional Greek began as product of ancient, Byzantine,
western and eastern inspirations. The main instrument lyre, is closely related
to the bowed Byzantine lyre.
The Lyre holy instrument begin from the "Epic of Digeni Akrita" around the 11th
Century a. c. The form of the lyre was not as it is today even if it is not
known how it really was. The only thing sure is that its manufacture is owed to
the will of the people to maintain for more time the sound that was produced by
a string. The Lyre is distinguished in Pear-shaped and Bottle-shaped. The Lyre is the main instrument played in Cretan music.
