This was the birth of the two-village system on Crete, in Gouves case the village Kato Gouves means
down, Pano Gouves means up.
Pano Gouves village was built beneath the mountain of Ederi meaning ivy. The Edri Mountain was the site where a CIA secret installation radar learning post was installed.
The locals found out about the installation and named it Mickey Mouse Mountain, which remains today as a local landmark the post today is closed.
Gouves population has increased dramatically in the past couple of
years due to its popularity and its close proximity to the islands capital Heraklion. and overseas persons moving into the village to enjoy the friendly atmosphere of village life.
Gouves falls within the municipality of Heraklion the capital of the island. a metropolitan city 20 minutes away on the bus. The capital is the main shopping location for the day market. close to the national museum on the island.
